Chirograph marriage contract of John of Middleton (c. 1373-1441) and Isabella, daughter of Roger of Thornton. Made between Christine (d. 1422), lady of Middleton, John of Middleton, knight, son and heir apparent of Christine, and John Fe[r]me on one part and Roger of Thornton (d. 1430), Leyn-[text wanting] Newcastle upon Tyne, John of Fenwick, chaplain, and Thomas of Pitington, chaplain, on the other. Given 6 November 1421.
John Middleton was Member of Parliament for Northumberland in April 1414, 1417, and 1426. Roger of Thornton was MP for Newcastle in 1399, 1411, 1417 and 1419: Roskell et al., The History of Parliament: the House of Commons 1386-1421.
Endorsed: in a 15th-century hand, Johes de Midyllton [illegible] / fil et her apparent / Ao 9. H. 5. 1421 / Johannes de Midylton = Isabelle fil / Roger / Thorton.’
Affixed with three seals. The first, an imperfect seal of John of Newbiggyng, oval, red, with a heraldic shield, a chevron, and a chief indented, within a pointed gothic quatrefoil, and the legend, ‘s[igillum] ioh[ann]is de newbiggyng’. The second, fragmentary and unidentifiable, oval, red. The third, imperfect counterseal probably of Roger of Thornton, oval, red, with a disc bearing a ‘T’ monogram.

Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician.
Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton.
Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7. Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
