Islamic religious texts in Arabic with interlinear Javanese translations and marginal notations.

A: f. 1r. incomplete verses of Sūrat al-Baqarah: 163 and 255 (ayat Kursi), commonly read during dhikr and for other purposes, including tahlil.

B and C: ff. 1v.-17r. Umm al-barāhin by Abū ‘Abd Allāh Muḥammad b. al-Walī al-Ṣāliḥ Yūsuf al-Sanūsī al-Mālikī al-Maghribī al-Tilimsānī (1437- 90) and Abū Laith al-Samarqandī’s Masā’il on theology of ahl al-sunnah wa-al-jamā‘ah. These two works seem to be misbound together.

On ff. 1v. et seqq. we find Umm al-barāhin, also called al-‘Aqīdah al-sanūsīyah, one of the principal works of Islamic theology by Abū ‘Abd Allāh Muḥammad b. al-Walī al-Ṣāliḥ Yūsuf al-Sanūsī al-Mālikī al-Maghribī al-Tilimsānī.

On ff. 16v.-17r. we find the end of Abū Laith al-Samarqandī’s Masā’il on theology of ahl al-sunnah wa-al-jamā‘ah, which is written in the form of questions and answers. This work is well known as Kitāb Samarqandī as mentioned in the colophon tammat hādhā al-kitāb Samarqandī (f.17r), or called Asmarakandhi. The author is Naṣr ibn Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Ibrāhīm al-Samarqandī (d. 375 AH/985 CE), well known as Imām al-Hudā, who wrote his monumental tafsīr entitled Baḥr al-‘ulūm.

Ff. 4v.-5r. and ff. 7v.-8r. are part of Umm al-barāhin; on ff.10v.-11r. is found part of Samarqandī; ff.11v.-12r. are again part of Umm al-barāhin.

D: ff. 17v-28r: Kitāb al-sittīn mas’alah, a fiqh treatise written by Abū al-‘Abbās Aḥmad al-Zāhid (d. 819 AH/1416 CE), which deals with the basic Islamic teachings according to the Shāfi‘ī madhhab. The colophon on f.28r says: tammat hādhā al-kitāb al-Sittīn, wallāhu a‘lam.

Marginal notes in Javanese mostly give a more detail explanation of the subject discussed in the main text. The note on the top of f. 17v contains an explanation of the significance of reciting basmalah before doing anything. It quotes a hadith which is frequently cited by kyais in pĕsantrens, which says, kullu amrin dhī bālin lā yubtada’u fīhi bismillāh al-raḥmān al-raḥīm fa-huwa aqta‘ (all good things, if started without reciting bismillāh al-raḥmān al-raḥīm, will have their blessings broken [Javanese pĕgat bĕrkate]).

E: ff. 28v.-30r. An Arabic treatise with extensive explanation of the significance and meanings of the two sentences of shahādah. The colophon says (f.30r), tammat hādhā al-kitāb bi-al-kalimāt.

F: f. 30v. The text says: qāla al-nabī ṣ m, ingandika Nabi, bismillāh al-raḥmān al-raḥīm, bismillāh al-raḥmān al-raḥīm.
