Grant by Prioress Rose and the convent of Rowney [Hertfordshire] to William Dolphin and Ralph Tailor [Parimentario] of Hertford, for the repair of the priory and for their homage and service, two acres of arable land. For this grant, Dolphin and Tailor give the priory a mark of silver. The charter dates to no later than 1257, when Rose resigned as prioress.
Endorsed: in a 15th-century hand, 'cart[a] prioresse et [con]vent[i] de Ruvnheye / q[ua]m [illegible] Will[elm]o Dolphin et Radulfo / P[ar]m[en]tar de duab[us] acr[is] t[er]re arabil[is] iux[ta] / Ffulgate / excerta[m] relig'; in a late 17th-century hand, ‘A deed of the prioress & / convent of S. Johns of / Lutlney of two acr[es] of / ara[ble] ground by Ffulgate / to William Dolphin & Rafe / Parmintar’; in an 18th-century hand, ‘This deed belongs to / Rowney / in Herts’.
Affixed with a seal of Rowney Priory, an oval, green, with a right hand supporting a dish bearing the head of John the Baptist, between sprays of foliage, with the legend, ‘sigill[um] [con]vent[i] s[an]c[t]i monialiu[m] de rugnh’ (see Birch, Catalogue of Seals (1887), I, p. 723).
