Chirograph of an agreement between Elizabeth, prioress of Syon Abbey [Middlesex], and Thomas, prior of Spalding Priory [Lincolnshire], brokered by Margaret [Beaufort] (b. 1443, d. 1509), mother of Henry VII. Since Edward IV’s reign, Spalding owed Syon £10 a year but this went unpaid until the sum reached £186 13s 4d. Terms set for Spalding Priory to repay the money; given 21 April 1490.
Endorsed: in an 18th-century hand, ‘Co: Middlesex / 21 April / 5 Henry 7 an[no] 1490 / Syon nunn[ery] Elizabeth abbess agreement / w[ith] Spalding Priory in Lincolnshire concern- / -ing an arrears of £40 yearly due from / that priory to Syon.’
Affixed with an unidentified imperfect counterseal, oval, red, with an eagle with wings spread.
