Confirmation by Margaret de Lacy, countess of Lincoln and Pembroke, widow, to John the chaplain, for his homage and service, of all the land which he purchased from Roger son of Simon in the fee of Bradeham; dated to between 1245, when Margaret’s second husband Walter Marshal, earl of Pembroke, died, and 1247, when William de Valence was created the new earl.
Endorsed: in a 13th-century hand,‘Carta comi[tis]s[e] / Linc[olnensis]'; in a 15th-century hand, ‘Carta Margarete Lacy comi[tis]s[e] / Lincoln[ensis] et Penb[roke]'; in an 18th-century hand, ‘Vides Asp.’
Affixed with an imperfect seal of Margaret de Lacy, a lozenge, green, with a full-length figure of Margaret in a long dress and headdress, foliage on each side, standing beneath castle battlements, her right hand holding a heraldic shield, all detail obliterated, her left hand on her chest, a heraldic shield on her left with a lion rampant, and the fragmentary legend ‘…rgarete…’ (see Birch, Catalogue of Seals (1887-1900), II, p. 391).
