Grant by Renaud Dammartin and Ida, count and countess of Boulogne, for the honour of God, St Thomas, archbishop of Canterbury and martyr, and for their souls and those of their parents, and heirs, to Christ Church Cathedral Priory, Canterbury, excusing the convent from tolls and customs at Boulogne, Calais, Hiwene, and Wissant; dated to between 1190, when Ida married Renaud, and 1214, when he was imprisoned for life by Philip II of France.
Endorsed: in a 13th century hand, ‘Carta Reginaldi comatis bolonie /de q[ui]et[clam]atia peo[illegible] et de o[mn]ib[us] co[n]suetu - / -ditub[us] de witlade de bolonia de / hwene et de caleis’.
Affixed with two seals. The first, an imperfect equestrian seal of Renaud, oval, green, with the count mounted and armoured, a shield in his left hand and a sword in his right, with the fragmentary legend, ‘sigillu… ….nald… …tis Bolo…’. Reverse: a heraldic shield with three bars, the arms of Dammartin, with the fragmentary legend, ‘secretu… …ld… …mi…s bolonie’. The second, an imperfect seal of Ida, lozenge, green, with a full length figure of Ida in a long dress, her right hand on her hip and her left hand holding a bird, with the legend, ‘sigilli de comitisse Bolonie’. Reverse: two heraldic shields, the top with three dots, the arms of Boulogne, the bottom with three bars, the arms of Dammartin.
