Chirograph lease for life by Margaret [de Grey (r. 1327/8-1333/4)], abbess of the Abbey of St Mary de la Pré outside Northampton, to William Landwath of Walda, of a messuage and half a virgate of arable land; given in the abbey’s chapter, Wednesday next after the feast of St Dunstan the Bishop [24 May], 1329.
Endorsed: in a 16th-century hand, ‘Abbatissa de pratis iuxta Nor[t]hamp[ton]’; in an 18th-century hand, 'Marg[aret] abbess of’.
Affixed with an imperfect seal of the abbey, a lozenge, green, with a full-length figure of the Virgin Mary, with a long dress, cloak, and headdress, a sceptre in her right hand and a book in her left, with the fragmentary legend, ‘…pituli sa… marie de p[ra]to norh…’ (see Birch, Catalogue of Seals (1887-1900), I, pp. 682-83).
