Grant by Margaret Basset to Roger Burt, clerk, of custody of all the lands and tenements that Ralph Burt held of her in Quorndon [Leicestershire], and the capital messuage and its appurtenances.
Endorsed: in a 13th-century hand, ‘Sc[r]iptum Margarete Basset'; in a 15th-century hand, ‘to / Querndon Roger Burt’.
Affixed with an imperfect seal of Margaret, lozenge, brown, with a full-length image of Margaret standing on a corbel, in a long dress and headdress, holding a heraldic shield in each hand, both indistinct, with the legend, ‘sigillum secreti’ (see Birch, Catalogue of Seals (1887-1900), II, p. 377).

Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician.
Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton.
Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7. Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
