Letter of Constance, daughter of Conan, duke of Brittany, to Richard [Fitzneal, r. 1189-98], bishop of London, asking him to receive Fougères Priory [Brittany] into the rectory of Cheshunt Church [Hertfordshire].
Endorsed: in a 13th-century hand, 'de eccl[e]s[ie] de / cestrehunt.'
Affixed with an imperfect seal of Constance, lozenge, brown, with a full-length image of a woman in a long dress and cloak, with a lily in her right hand, a bird on her left hand, and the fragmentary legend, ‘…nstanica ducis…’ (see Birch, Catalogue of Seals (1887-1900), II, p. 378).

Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician. Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton.
Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7.
Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
