Chirograph between Christina [of Markyate, c. 1096-1155x1166], prioress of Markyate Priory [Bedfordshire], and William of Arden of Hamton. The priory grants William all of its land in Deddington [Oxfordshire] and Kinwalsey [Warwickshire], which Jordan of Stlingeleia held of the priory; dated to between the founding of Markyate in 1145 and Christina’s death by 1166.
Endorsed: in a 12th-century hand, ‘[illegible]-ampon / [illegible]’.
Affixed with two seals. The first, an imperfect and indistinct seal, lozenge, brown, with Christ enthroned, a book in his left hand. The second, imperfect and very indistinct, lozenge, brown (see Birch, Catalogue of Seals (1887-1900), I, p. 658).

Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician. Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton.
Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7.
Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
