Inspection and confirmation by Petronilla of Nereford of an inspection and confirmation by Cecily of Ufford, daughter and heir of Robert de Valoines, of a charter of William Testard of Cranford, which he made to Prioress Margery and Campsey Priory [Suffolk], with the king’s licence and at the instance of Cecily, and in return for a sum of money from Cecily. William grants Campsey 7 messuages, a mill, 160 acres of land, 10 acres of meadow, 10 acres of pasture, 20 acres of wood, and 30s rent with appurtenances in Bruisyard, Sweffling, Peasenhall, Badingham, Cranford and Parham [all Suffolk]; given at Campsey, the Monday after Michaelmas [5 October] 1321.
Endorsed: in a 13th-century hand, ‘Brusyerd’.
Affixed with a fragmentary seal of Petronilla, lozenge, green, with a heraldic shield, half broken away, and a foliage border (see Birch, Catalogue of Seals (1887-1900), III, p. 298).

Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician. Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton.
Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7.
Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
