- Title:
- Year-long menu for Princess Mary Tudor, daughter of Henry VIII
- Scope & Content:
-
A year-long lunch and dinner menu for Princess Mary Tudor (later Mary I), daughter of Henry VIII, beginning with the dishes for Christmas Day, New Year's Day and Twelfth Night, and then listing the menu for each day of the week and for fish days.
The menu is divided into six columns. The first lists the dishes for Mary; the second those for her senior household officials: the lord president, chancellor, chamberlain, vice-chamberlain, steward, treasurer, comptroller, and others of the council; the third for her cofferer, clerk of the comptroller, clerk of the kitchen, and marshal; the fourth for gentlemen and gentlewomen. The names of the final two columns are missing.
Mary was served with two courses at each meal of up to fourteen dishes at a time, including roast swan, venison, pike, brawn, heron, rabbit, pheasant, sturgeon, crane, lamb, partridge, blancmange, custard, and tarts. The date has been torn off but originally read 1531, according to an earlier catalogue (see Letters and Papers (1531-1532), p. 763), the year when Mary's health declined significantly as she became estranged from her father and her mother Catherine of Aragon (b. 1485, d. 1536) was banished from court. Mary and her household remained at court, spending much time at Windsor.
