After an inquisition into the property of the late Thomas Watwood, held at Wolverhampton on 7 April 1581, who died in debt to the Crown, Elizabeth I (r. 1558-1603) leases to Hugh Rabone one of Watwood’s former properties, a croft without pasture called Whitmoors or Le Priors Gyrche, Staffordshire; given at Westminster, 4 July 1582.
Endorsed: in a 17th-century hand, ‘A lease to Raubone from the queen / of divers lands ro-[illegible] of [illegible] l-[illegible]-th in / meayford being called cottons croft / and meadow’.
Affixed with an imperfect Great Seal of Elizabeth I, oval, brown, with the queen enthroned, a sceptre in her right hand, an orb in her left, with the legend, ‘elizabeth dei gracia anglie francie et hibernie regina fidei defensor’. Reverse: Elizabeth on a horse pacing to the left, crowned and with a sceptre in her right hand, her left hand holding the reins, with the legend, ‘elizabeth dei gracia anglie francie et hibernie regina fidei defensor’ (Birch, Catalogue of Seals (1887)), I, p. 51).
