- Two sketchbook journals belonging to David Richardson, Ralph's grandfather, recording trips and holidays with writing and sketches.
The smaller volume dates from around 1854 and mostly contains sketches; it describes a trip around County Wicklow, Ireland, and another trip to the Scottish Highlands and Dartmoor, with accompanying drawings of sights seen on both excursions.
The larger volume dates from 1856-1858 and describes several trips around England with writing and sketches. There is a particular focus on the geology, industry and history of the areas visited.
The journal begins with a trip to Hadrian’s Wall in 1856 and includes a newspaper cutting reporting on a visit to the wall on behalf of a scientific society by Dr Bruce and Mr Clayton; it is not clear whether Richardson accompanied them. The journal also includes a trip around Northumberland in 1856 and to Edinburgh and the surrounding area in Jul 1857. It continues with a description of Richardson’s activities in Aug and Sep 1857 with an itinerary for attending an exhibition, a list of geological specimens, and a tour of some Welsh collieries and slate mines. There is a description of a further tour of Cleveland county in Oct 1857 with a pasted-in geological map. Finally the volume concludes with notes of a tour in Norway in Jun and Jul 1858. This final section includes a pressed sprig of leaves from a Cloudberry and a folded map showing the route of the voyage.
