Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna sutta nissaya
- Scope & Content:
-
A bilingual translation of a canonical Buddhist sutta that forms a part of the Dīgha-nikāya collection. This discourse discusses meditation technics and was frequently transmitted both in Pāli and in bilingual translations as a separate text/manuscript. The liturgical and curricular uses of Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna sutta in premodern and early modern Burma have not yet been identified, and neither there is much research into early modern practices of meditation in Burma. However, the existence of a fairly substantial corpus of works on meditation, including apocryphal suttas in Pāli, meditation manuals and works praising meditation in vernacular transmitted alongside Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna sutta suggests that this text and its bilingual translations in particular might indeed have been used as a guide for meditating monks. The author of the nissaya has not been established yet, but no comparison of this nissaya with translations of this sutta provided in bilingual renderings of the Dighā-nikāya was undertaken so far.
Extent and format of original material: 1 fascicle of 22 inscribed and 2 uninscribed folios.
