- Title:
- Hugh Wood: Correspondence with the publishers Universal Edition (London) Ltd. and with J. & W. Chester
- Scope & Content:
-
The file is sub-divided into two parts: correspondence with Universal Edition (Wood’s first publisher), and the first portion of his correspondence with his subsequent publisher, J. & W. Chester (1973-1979). For subsequent correspondence with Chester Music (1980-2008), see MS Mus. 1893/1/2.
1. Correspondence with Universal Edition (London) Ltd. (1957-76).
Begins with signed contracts spanning 1960-72. Thereafter, correspondence is arranged chronologically, divided by year, beginning with an invitation (1957) to a reception for Yvonne Loriod and Pierre Boulez. Of particular note is Wood’s correspondence (1969) with the cellist Zara Nelsova, soloist in the first performance of his Cello Concerto (Op.12): 10 autograph letters from Nelsova, with typed draft replies from Wood. On 23 March 1973, John Palmer wrote to advise Wood that Universal Edition would not be renewing its contract with him. Letters spanning 1972-73 provide the background to this parting of the ways.
2. Correspondence with J. & W. Chester (1973-79).
The correspondence is arranged chronologically, divided by year. Includes (June 1975) Wood’s draft text and final proof for a promotional leaflet summarising his career to date. Correspondence for 1977 includes an eleven-page detailed list of corrections to the proposed publication of the score of Wood's Cello Concerto (Op. 12).
