Correspondence and copies of minutes relating to the appointment of Ralph Richardson, Laurence Olivier and John Burrell as managers of the Old Vic theatre in 1944, as well as detailing the termination of their directorships in 1948.
This folder includes:
- a letter to Ralph from Evelyn M Williams, dated 5 Sep 1942, requesting details of Ralph's service record so an application could be made to the Council for the Encouragement of Music and the Arts (CEMA) for his transfer from the Admiralty to the Old Vic
- a draft letter to the First Lord of the Admiralty from Lord Lytton on behalf of CEMA, dated 13 Mar 1944, requesting the release of Richardson and Laurence Olivier from the service for the management of the Old Vic theatre
- a copy of a reply to Lord Lytton from A V Alexander, dated 12 Apr 1944, agreeing to the release of Olivier and Richardson from the Admiralty
- a letter to Ralph from Lord Lytton, dated 17 Apr 1944, passing on A V Alexander’s decision and requesting Ralph’s consent to resign his commission

- a letter to Ralph from Bronson Albery, dated 19 May 1944, criticising some publicity material produced by Ralph, Laurence Olivier and John Burrell; a draft reply is written on the reverse
- minutes of meetings of the Drama Panel on 25 May , 7 Jun, and 16 Jun 1944
- report of a meeting between representatives of CEMA and the Old Vic on 1 Jun 1944 to discuss cost estimates
- a letter to Ralph from Tyrone Guthrie, dated 20 Jun 1944, setting out the terms of Ralph’s association with the Old Vic
- a letter to Ralph from Viscount Esher, dated 9 Jul 1948, enclosing a proposed memorandum altering the administration of the Old Vic to establish annual directorships and reduce the acting undertaken by directors
- a telegram to Ralph from John Burrell, dated 16 Jul 1948, regarding the proposed memorandum, with draft reply from Ralph on the reverse
- a press announcement issued by the Governors of the Royal Victoria Hall in Dec 1948 dismissing Burrell, Olivier and Richardson as directors of the Old Vic
