A compilation of technical and practical advice for navigators, attributed to the 'wise men of the sea' (علماء البحر), and completed by an un-named scribe on 2 Jumādá II 1287/30 August 1870 (see colophon, f. 76r, transcribed below).
The first half of the work (ff. 51r-59v) is divided into an introduction and thirteen chapters (أبواب) detailing navigational methods and astronomical, calendrical and geometric calculations useful for navigation.
The second half of the work (ff. 59v-76r) is divided into eleven sections (فصول) which contain navigational instructions for courses between ports along the West Indian, East African, Yemeni, Omani, Red Sea and Persian Gulf coasts and the islands of Socotra and Zanzibar. They include instructions for following the rising and setting of certain stars between set points on a route (stellar navigation), taking depth soundings, and for the recognition of prominent topographical features near harbours, which are described and sketched using brown ink.
