This material is a palm-leaf manuscript from Kondavil, Sri Lanka. It is written in Tamil verse in the period of 1800-1850 in Tamil script. The content details 18 signs of brain/mind related disease, including post-partum conditions and its cures. It also mentions Sexually Transmitted Disease, Pleurisy etc. The term for STIs is paṟaṅki puṇ which literally means 'white man's wound'. This is the period where there was a general discourse around Contagious disease and the legal policing of the same. It is interesting to note existing traditional knowledge on the subject even though the name of the illness suggests that it was more recently identified and named during the time of this palm leaf manuscript.
