Grant by Elizabeth I to Gilbert Talbot, earl of Shrewsbury, KG, appointing him her lieutenant and representative in the Order of the Garter’s ceremonies that year on 22, 23 and 24 April, that is, the day before, the day of, and the day after St George’s Day, patron of the Order; given at the Palace of Westminster, 22 April 1598
Inscribed with Elizabeth’s signature in the upper margin.
Endorsed: in a late 16th-century hand, ‘Commission from Eliz: to Gilbert / Earl of Shre[wsbu]ry to be leuft at / St Geroges feast 4 Eliz’.
Affixed with an imperfect seal of the Order of the Garter, oval, red, with a heraldic shield with the arms of England impaled with the arms of Elizabeth (the lions of England quartered with the fleur-de-lys of France), flanked by branches, encircled with a crowned garter. ‘honi soit qui mal y pense’.

Gilbert Talbot (b. 1552, d. 1616), 7th earl of Shrewsbury, 1598.
Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician. Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton.
Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7.
Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
