Letters of John Woodburn (1803-1841), Bengal Army

Typescript copies of letters from John Woodburn to his mother, sisters and brother, with a few to other family members. Includes a letter from Captain James Woodburn on march from Benares to Delhi, dated 15th December 1841, giving news of the death of John Woodburn, and a copy of his will.
The letters were written from Etawah, Delhi, Loodianah [Ludhiana], Camp Shikarpore, Gerishk, Candahar [Kandahar], Camp Shuftool, Camp Oolan Robat and Camp Secundrabad, and are concerned with news of family and friends, taking command of a Regiment of the Forces of Shah Sujah-ul-Mulk, his impressions of Afghanistan and reports on British military and political actions during the first Anglo Afghan war.
Also includes extracts from Memorials of Afghanistan and Memoirs and Correspondence of Major-General Sir William Nott, both by J H Stocqueler.
Content warning: The letters of John Woodburn (1803-1841) contain his personal views and opinions, with explicit language and terminology which today are deemed unacceptable and offensive and may cause upset.
