The right and title of Thomas Cotton to his house in Westminster
- Scope & Content:
-
The right and title of Thomas Cotton (1594-1662) to his house and gardens in St Margaret's Parish, Westminster.
Lists the descent of the house from its grant by King James I of England (r. 1603-1625) to Robert Bowyer (c. 1560-1621), parliamentary official and politician, in 1614. Bowyer sold the house to Thomas Knyvett, Baron Knyvett (1545/6-1622), courtier, later that year. It was then granted by Knyvett's son, Thomas Knyvett (d. 1637), to Henry Elsynge (c. 1577-1635), parliamentary official, and John Selden (1584-1654), lawyer and scholar, in 1622. Elsynge and Selden conveyed the house to Thomas Cotton in 1630.
