Confirmation of Everard (r. 1121-1145), bishop of Norwich, to the cathedral priory of Norwich, of the chapter’s rights and property granted to them by his predecessor Herbert (r. 1094-1119), King Henry I (r. 1100-1135), Pope Paschal II (r. 1099-1118), and King Stephen (r. 1135-1154), including many churches, lands and privileges.
Witnesses: William, archdeacon of Norwich, William son of Humphrey, archdeacon of Turchill’, Arthur, Everard’s brother, and others.
Dated to between the beginning of Stephen’s reign and Everard’s resignation as bishop in 1145.
Endorsed: ‘Ebrardi episcopi de terris / et ecclesia de Torchilla et terra [illegible] / de ecclesia sancti nicholai de brakedele et sancti sepulcri’ (12th century).

Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton.
Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7.
Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
