Final concord of William, son of Ralph of Wye, quitclaiming to Rochester Cathedral Priory all his land in Elham (Kent), for which the priory gives William 30 marks. Agreed in the court of the king at Westminster before Richard of Ilchester, bishop of Winchester (r. 1173-1188), Geoffrey Ridel, bishop of Ely (1173-1189), John of Oxford, bishop of Norwich (r. 1175-1200), Ranulf de Glanville (d. 1190), justice, Richard Fitz Neal (d. 1198), treasurer, and others.
Given at Westminster, 1 May 1182.
Endorsed: 'De Elham' (12th century).

Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician. Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton.
Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7.
Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
