Recto: Petition of William Warbelton, esquire, to Humphrey, duke of Gloucester (1390-1447). On the evening of Thursday 17 May, Warbelton heard that William Perkins, also known as Jack Sharp, was hiding in Oxford and so he told the Chancellor of Oxford and his commissary and the bailiff of Oxford, who arrested Sharp. Warbelton asks for a reward for having assisted in the capture of Sharp and for his costs in helping put down a riot linked to Sharp’s capture.
The signatures of Humphrey, Henry Chichele, archbishop of Canterbury (c. 1364-1443), John Kemp, archbishop of York and Lord Chancellor (c. 1380-1454), John Mowbray, 2nd duke of Norfolk (1392-1432), John Langdon, bishop of Rochester (d. 1434), William Grey, bishop of Lincoln (d. 1436), and John Stafford, bishop of Bath and Wells (d. 1452).
Verso: Latin memorandum by the king’s council to give Warbelton a reward of £20.
Given at Westminster, 29 November 1431.
Endorsed: ‘Reward from the king’ (17th century).
William Perkins alias Jack Sharp led a failed Lollard rising in Berkshire in 1431. He was tried for treason before Duke Humphrey and was beheaded.

Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician. Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton.
Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7.
Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
