Draft of a writ of Queen Elizabeth I of England (r. 1558-1603) to Sir Francis Drake (1540-1596) regarding the preparations for his raid on Spain’s American colonies in 1585.
The queen is pleased with the preparations for the voyage of 11 ships, 4 barques and 80 privateers, for Drake and his men to have a portion of the loot taken, that they not suffer any losses if she decides to delay the expedition, and that she will order the Lord Admiral to deliver the ship Elizabeth Bonaventure and to help prepare the voyage.
Corrections in the hand of William Cecil, Lord Burghley (1521-1598), Treasurer of England.
Endorsed: ‘Hir majesties agreement / touching a viage for / Sir Francis Drake’ (16th century);‘Corrected by the Lord Treasurer’s hand’ (early 17th century).

Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician. Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton.
Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7.
Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
