Acquittance by Thomas, duke of Clarence, earl of Albemarle (1387-1421), and son of Henry IV, to King Henry V of England (r. 1413-1422) of £830 3s 7d, paid to Thomas and Margaret, his wife, by Thomas Fitzalan, 5th earl of Arundel and Treasurer (1381-1415).

Endorsed: 'Thomas duke of Clarence his receipt for £830 5: 7 annuity out of the Exchequer, 1 H. 5' (18th century).
Affixed with an imperfect seal of Thomas, oval, red, with a heraldic shield, couché, quaterly, 1, 4, the arms of France, 2, 3, the arms of England, over all a label of three points each charged with three ermine spots, crest on a helmet, and chapeau turned up ermine, a lion of England, crowned, gorged with a label as in the arms, flanked by ostritch feathers charged with ermine spots and labelled, a background of foliage. Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician. Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton.
Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7.
Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
