Will of William Meckilfield, esquire, making bequests to his wife, his brother Robert Meckilfield, his eldest son John Ulueston, several religious houses, and others, and leaving money for masses to be sung.
Given at Henham (Suffolk), 7 November 1439.
With a Latin addendum attached in which Meckilfield leaves his body to be buried in the graveyard of Wangford church (Suffolk) and makes a bequest of money to the same church as an offering and for repairs, as well as bequests to other churches and priests and for the repair of the bridge of Blyford (Suffolk).
Given at Henham, 20 September 1439.
On the reverse of the addendum is a probate certificate by the official of the bishop of Norwich. Given at Norwich, 10 June 1441.
Endorsed: 'Ultima volunta Willelmi Mekilfeld armiger vii die novembris / anno domini millio ccc xxxix facta apud Heucham' (15th century).
Affixed with two seals. The first, very indistinct, red, oval, with a rose. The second, very fragmentary and sealed in a bag.

Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician. Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton.
Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7.
Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
