Chirograph between William of Willoughby, knight, son of Robert of Willoughby, knight, and Philip le Despenser, knight, Eudo la Zouche, Thomas la Ware, clerks, Henry Malbys, parson of Willoughby church, William of Scrayfield, parson of Braytoft, and William Mitchell of Friskenay, agreeing that William of Willoughby shall give his sister Margaret, upon her reaching the age of twelve, a dowry of 1000 marks, if the goods of Robert of Willoughby are insufficient, and that William of Willoughby shall support her until then, providing the manors of Frampton and Byker as security.
Given at Toft in Holland (Lincolnshire), Sunday next after the feast of the Apostles Simon and Jude (29 October) 1396.
Affixed with 6 seals. The first, a fragmentary seal of Philip le Despenser, oval, red, a shield of arms, couché, destroyed, with a helmet above, a tasselled plait on the left, a rose on the right, within a gothic quatrefoil. The second, an imperfect seal of Eudo la Zouche, oval, red, with a heraldic shield with ten roundles, on a canton ermine a mullet for difference, within a gothic panel. 'sigillum eud... la zouche'. The third, an imperfect seal of Thomas la Ware, oval, red, with a heraldic shield with a lion rampant, within a carved panel with quatrefoils along the inner edge. 'sigillum thome la warre'. The fourth, a seal of Henry Malby, oval, red, with the Virgin enthroned on the left, the Virgin before the Cross on the right, within gothic panels, a heraldic shield below, a chevron between three hinds. 'sigillum henrici malleby'. The fifth, a seal of William of Scrayfield, oval, red, a 'WS' monogram, from a signet. The sixth, a seal of William Mitchell of Friskenay, oval, red, a 'WM' monogram, from a signet.

Provenance:
Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician. Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton.
Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7.
Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
