Confirmation by Alexander II of Scotland of a confirmation by Alexander, steward of Scotland, to Melrose Abbey, of a grant by Richard le Waleys, tenant of the same Alexander, of land in Barmor and Godeneth, and of a grant by the same Alexander of freedom from suit at court, etc. due for their possessions in Carentabel, Mauchlyn and Barmor.
Witnesses: Alexander Comyn (d. 1289), 2nd earl of Buchan and justiciar of Scotland, Patrick (d. 1232), earl of Dunbar, and Robert de Brus.
Given at Scone, 14 April 1231.
Endorsed: ‘Confirmacio liberatis de Kile’ (13th century).

Provenance:
Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician. Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton.
Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7.
Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
