Grant by David I of Scotland, with the consent of Henry, his son, to the church of St Mary Haddington, of Clerkington with its boundaries on both sides of the water, as perambulated by William of Graham, Durand the sheriff, Richard the clerk, Osbert, prior of Edinburgh, and others, when Thorold the archdeacon ended his suit with David at Peebles, together with all the tithes and ecclesiastical rights throughout Haddingtonshire.
Witnesses: Robert (r. 1123x1124-1159), bishop of St Andrews, John (r. 1114x1118-1147), bishop of Glasgow, Gregory (r. 1147-1169), bishop of Dunkeld, Geoffrey (r. 1128-1154), abbot of Dunfermline, Denis (r. 1140-1142x1147), prior of Scone, Roger, prior of Dunfermline, Robert de Sigillo, and others.
Given at Perth, 14 June.

Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician. Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton.
Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7.
Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
