It is told that Mahabaratham is written by Lord Ganesa while viyasa reciting. Villipuththaralvar has translated 4351 stanzas and Nallappillaiyar has translated 14000 stanzas in 132 chapters. This work describes the Kurushetra war and explains the country, citry, war details of society ethics. Leaf nos 17, 41, 60, and 210 are missing. There are three leaves in leaf no 92; two leaves in the leaf no 206 and 259.
வியாச முனிவர் சொல்ல விநாயகப் பெருமான் கிரந்த எழுத்தில் எழுதியதாகச் சொல்லப்படுவது மகாபாரதம். இதன் முற்பகுதியின் தமிழாக்கத்தினை வில்லிபுத்தூராழ்வார் 4351 பாடல்களில் பத்துப் பருவங்களாகச் சுருக்கிப் பாடியுள்ளார். இவரைப் பின்பற்றி நல்லாப்பிள்ளையார் வியாச பாரதம் முழுவதையும் பதினெட்டுப் பருவங்கள் 132 சருக்கங்களில் 14000 பாடல்களில் பாடியிருக்கின்றார். வில்லிபுத்தூரார் பாடாது விட்டவற்றையும் நல்லாப்பிளையார் சேர்த்தும் விரித்தும் பாடியுள்ளார். இவ்விரு பாடல் நூல்களின் உரைநடையாக இந்நூல் அமைந்துள்ளது. பாண்டவர்களுக்கும் கௌரவர்களுக்கும் நிகழ்ந்த குருசேத்திரப் போரை மையப்படுத்தி பிரம்மம், ஆத்மா என்பன தொடர்பான மெய்யியல் உள்ளடங்களும், அறம், பொருள், இன்பம் வீடு என்னும் மனிதனுடைய நால்வகை நோக்கங்களையும், சமூகத்துடனும், உலகத்துடனும் தனிப்பட்டவருக்கு உரிய உறவுகளையும், பழவினைகள் பற்றி எல்லாம் இந்நூல் எடுத்துரைக்கிறது. 17, 41, 60, 210 ஆகிய ஏடுகள் இல்லை. 92ஆம் ஏடு மூன்று முறையும், 206 மற்றும் 259ஆம் ஏடுகள் இரண்டு முறையும் உள்ளன. பல ஏடுகளின் எண்கள் கண்டு பிடிக்கமுடியாத அளவிற்குச் சிதைவுடன் காணப்படுகிறது.
