- Scope & Content:
- This collection has 14 sheets, some of which are composites of individual sheets pasted to form contiguous areas of India and adjacent countries. The most recent printed date on the maps is 1946, the oldest is 1923. The manuscript additions on some maps are undated. The envelope associated with the collection is undated.
- IOR/X/14751/1 is formed of 3 sheets at a scale of 1:1,000,000, only one of which has production details: International Map of the World (IMW), Sheet N.H.41 Kandahār 1941 Aeronautical Edition, printed 1942. Pasted on its Eastern edge are two other sheets from a different, coloured edition of the IMW, with manuscript additions in coloured pencil on verso: 'N.W.F.P. and Baluchistan'.
- IOR/X/14751/2 is formed of 12 sheets produced by the Survey of India at a scale of 1:126,720, four of which have production details. The sheet numbers are: 53C/SE, 53G/SW, 53G/SE, 53H/NW, 53H/NE, 53H/SW, 53H/SE, 54E/NW, 54E/NE, 54E/SW, 54E/SE, and 54I/SW. Visible production information gives dates between 1923 and 1943. Manuscript in coloured pencil on verso: 'Delhi Area', and in lead pencil 'Panipat'.
- IOR/X/14751/3 is formed of three sheets from different editions of Asia 1:4,000,000 world series: 33 Northern India, 34 China, and 45 Southern India. Sheet 33 is identified as First Edition; sheet 34 is identified as HIND 1002; and sheet 45 is identified as GSGS 2957, 1936. Only sheet 45 has dates, stating it was reproduced by 512 Fd. Survey Coy., R.E., Mar. 1943 from W.O. black pulls dated 1939. Manuscript additions in coloured pencil on verso: 'S. India' and 'India 4 Million'.
- IOR/X/14751/4 is formed on 4 sheets produced by Survey of India at a scale of 1 inch to 1 mile: 53G/12, 53G/16, 53H/9, and 53H/13, together covering an area centred broadly on Meerut. The latter two sheets have production information, and are dated 1926 and 1943 respectively. Both were heliozincographed at the Survey of India Offices, Calcutta.
- IOR/X/14751/5 is a monograph map formed of two sheets pasted together, 'Indian Ocean including Australia, New Zealand and Malaysia', E.A.F. No 778 SECURITY, reproduced and printed E.A. Survey group April 1942. Scale varies. The map includes six inset enlarged maps of parts of the main map, at different scales.
- IOR/X/14751/6 is a 'Road Map of India' showing main roads over topography at a scale of 50 miles to 1 inch, published under the direction of the Surveyor General of India, 1939. There are over 50 manuscript additions in coloured and lead pencil and black ink. Part of Burma is inset in the lower right corner. Part of Pakistan is inset in the lower left corner. Both insets are at the same scale as the main map.
- IOR/X/14751/7 is of 'India Showing Railways open and under construction on 31st. March 1942', at a scale of 1:4,250,000. Railways are differentiated by gauge and number of lines. There are 10 inset maps around the perimeter of the map showing enlarged detail, mainly of settlements but also wider areas. For Official Use Only - B. Engraved and heliozincographed at the Survey of India Offices, Calcutta.
- IOR/X/14751/8 is a political map of 'India showing Provinces, States & Districts', with boundaries and headquarters of provinces at a scale of 1 inch to 70 miles. Territories are distinguished in colour between British India, Indian States, Leased under British Administration, Tribal Areas, and Foreign Possessions in India. A table of references in the lower left corner identifies 115 areas too small to be named on the map, listed by territory. Published under the direction of the Surveyor General of India, 1938. Heliozincographed at the Survey of India Offices (P.L.O.).
- IOR/X/14751/9 is a topographical 'Delhi Guide Map' at 3 inches to 1 mile. It is a 1943 reprint of the 7th (Revised) edition, 1942, produced under the direction of the Surveyor General of India and heliozincographed at the Survey of India Offices. The map shows railways, roads, built-up areas, and selected building. A reference list to the left of the map lists map features under categories such as Banks, Hotels, Hospitals, Residences, and Roads. Ruled lines have been drawn in the lower right corner in lead pencil.
- IOR/X/14751/10 is the 3rd (Revised) edition, 1939, of a topographical 'Dehra Dūn Guide Map' at a scale of 3 inches to 1 mile. The map shows roads tracks, buildings and a range of topographical features. There is an inset map in the top left quadrant at a scale of 1:1,000,000, showing 'Routes from Dehra Dūn'. For Official use Only. Published under the direction of the Surveyor General of India, and heliozincographed at the Survey of India Offices, Dehra Dūn.
- IOR/X/14751/11 is a National Geographic topographical map of 'India and Burma' at a scale of 1:6,000,000, 1946. It shows India and adjacent countries with boundaries. Two inserts in the bottom left corner show 'Bombay' and 'Calcutta' both at 1:500,000. Political subdivisions, too complex for inclusion in a general map of India, are shown on a special map on the reverse side of the sheet. Compiled and drawn in the Cartographic Section of The National Geographic Society for The National Geographic Magazine. The reverse monochrome map is 'Political Subdivisions of India' at the same scale of 1:6,000,000. In the top right corner is a text entitled 'The Political Geography of India'. In the top left corner of the map there is a list of the 23 cities of India with a population of more than 200,000, according to the Census of India, 1941. In the bottom right corner is a 'Key to Political Subdivisions too Small to Name on this Map', listing 117 locations.
- IOR/X/14751/12/1-3 are three maps from the Survey of India quarter inch series (scale (1:253,440): 72 M, Arun Valley, 1930; 78A, Darjeeling, 1937; and 78B, Jalpaiguri,1936. Published under the direction of the Surveyor General of India, heliozincographed at the Survey of India Offices, Calcutta.
- IOR/X/14751/13 is a brown envelope associated with this collection of maps, addressed one one side to Andrew Cook, Esq., India Office Library, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, 197 Blackfriars Road, London, E.C.1. Written in ink on the other side is 'Indian Maps'.
