‘Fantasy Sonata for piano solo', by Sir Michael Tippett. Described as 'op. 4' by the composer on the front cover. Autograph manuscript in black ink with some amendments in pencil. Pages numbered 1-38, with the title-page detached. Dated 1 June 1938 at the end of the piece.
The work was first performed by Phyllis Sellick in November 1938 and first published as 'Piano Sonata' by Schott Music in 1942 (see British Library, g.1125.tt.(25.)). A revised version was published in 1954 as 'Sonata for Piano' (see g.1595.(3.)) . It has subsequently become known as Piano Sonata No. 1.
For a manuscript copy dated July 1938, see Add MS 72016. That copy incorporates changes indicated in annotations added to the present manuscript. Both include a version of the fifth variation of the first movement that is different to either of the later published versions. In the present manuscript, the last movement is also written in different note values than those found in the published score. Other differences include the left hand part in the penultimate bar of the final movement and some dynamics, articulation marks, tempo indications as well as occasionally the beaming of rhythmic groups.
