44 letters by John Newton (1725-1807) to Dr Thomas Ring (1761-1840) and Sophia Ring, née Tompson (1768-1848), dated 1793-1802 (ff. 1-79). The letters begin after a visit to Reading and concern Newton’s close friendship with the Rings. Subjects include the spiritual concerns of evangelicals in Reading and their relationship with the Anglican rector of St Giles’s, Reading, Newton’s own position as an Anglican, the marriage of Thomas and Sophia Ring, Newton’s grief about the death of his wife (in 1790), and the mental health of his adopted daughter Eliza in 1801-02. The volume also includes 13 letters by Elizabeth [Eliza] Catlett (1769-1834), the adopted daughter of Newton, to Sophia Ring, dated 1798-1813 (ff. 80-105).
