A Pecha. A Tibetan book, made of long strips of paper, in imitation of the Indian palm-leaf manuscripts.
- Scope & Content:
- A handwritten books of Tibetan texts written on modern paper. Written in "headed" Tibetan dbu chen (Uchen) script with some "headless" Tibetan dbu med (Ume) script. A book containing eight hand copied texts bound together in one volume, texts that were becoming unreadable because of age: མི་ཁ་རྒྱང་འབོད། mika gyang bod. A ritual against malicious gossip (performed outside) མི་ཁ་ནང་སྒྲུབ་ mika nang drub. A different ritual against malicious gossip (performed inside) དྲག་པོ་དགུ་ཟོར། drakpo gu zor. A warthful ceremony during which the chowa dances རྒྱལ་མདོས། gyal dö. A ceremony for harmful spirits བདུད་མདོས། dud dö. A thread cross ceremony to protect against demons འདྲེ་མོ་མདོས། dremo dö. A thread cross ritual against a particular dangerous spirit སྲི་མནན། sri nön. A tantric ritual to capture a malignant spirit དགུ་མིག gu mik. A ceremony to remove obstacles undertaken every nine years, age 9, 18, 27 and so on.
Extent: One bound book consisting of 44 folios folded in a simple binding.
Size and dimensions of original material: Each folio is 60 cm x 12 cm, folding to 30 cm x 12 cm.
Condition of original material: Darkened and stained through usage throughout. Final page damaged.
Custodial history: The older material has been handed down from father to son for at least four generations. This book of texts was copied by Tenzin Chhoephel's grandfather,.
Arrangement: All the material is stored in the prayer room (not seen) and was brought out to be measured and digitised. It is kept in boxes when travelling. The precise country of origin is unknown. However it is almost certain that the original texts were created in Tibet, though the specific material in question has been copied locally in Spiti (India) at a later date.
