Volume bound in black leather with tartan endplates, entitled Stuartiana, or Bubbles blown by and to some of the family of Stuart. Printed privately by Jonathan Rashleigh for Sir William Stuart (1798-1874).
The volume contains the bookplate of Ralph Esme Stuart stuck over the bookplate of Charles Pole Stuart next to the following handwritten inscription: "Charles Pole Stuart from his aff't Father W Stuart, Sept 1857 - N.B. only twenty two copies of this work were ever printed". It includes an index at the end.
The volume consists mostly of anecdotes of the royal court recalled by William Stuart’s mother, Sophia Margaret Juliana Penn (d 1847), some poems by his aunt, Lady Louisa Stuart (1757-1851), and anecdotes of William Stuart about his father, the Most Rev. Hon. William Stuart, and transcriptions of letters to the Reverend Stuart from King George III.
Sophia Penn’s anecdotes concern figures including: George III, Queen Charlotte, Lady Lempster, Doctor Johnson, David Garrick, Sarah Siddons, John Kemble, Catherine Stephens, Charles X of France, Madame Camporese, Countess of Egremont, Duchess of Richmond, Duchesse de St Leon, Lavalette, and Napoleon.
William Stuart’s anecdotes concern his father’s career, George IV as regent, Lord Brougham, Lord Stuart de Rothesay, William Holmes, and General Le Marchant.
