- Title:
- Letters sent by Sir James Willoughby Gordon to his wife during the Peninsular War
- Scope & Content:
- Letters sent by Sir James Willoughby Gordon to his wife during September and October 1812, some including original envelopes, one with an attached family seal.
These letters begin with one on 8 Sep from Valladolid, originally enclosing a copy of a report on the position of the troops.
The letters proceed to follow the French army withdrawing from Madrid. Gordon stops with the army at the following towns in order: Torquemada, Cordovilla, Frandovinez, Villetoro and on to Burgos.
The letters then describe the ongoing siege of Burgos castle, mostly from the nearby villages of Cordovilla, Frandovinez and Villetoro.
The letters describe interesting details including an encounter with an unexploded shell, suggestions of potential French tactics, the size of the allied army, the pursuit of some sheep thieves, and recent changes to allied cavalry uniforms causing confusion.
A letter from Cordovilla, dated 14 Sep, encloses a list of the places visited during the march from Lisbon to Madrid, and in a letter from Villetoro written on 13 and 15 Oct Gordon passes on his good wishes to his daughter on her birthday and his wife on their anniversary.
A letter from Frandovinez, dated 17 Sep, encloses a hand-drawn map showing the positions of the armies along the Rio Arlanzon, outside Burgos, on 16 Sep.
