- Title:
- Henry Woolf: Additional Letters Received from Harold Pinter
- Scope & Content:
- Letters (and one fax) received by Henry Woolf from Harold Pinter. The letters are additional to the main sequence of letters from Pinter to Woolf (for which, see Add MS 89094).
(1). 27 November 1952 (franking date). Autograph letter in red ink (1 sheet) with envelope. Written from Ballyshannon, dated only 'Sat.' Pinter mockingly admonishes Woolf' for not having written: 'However stinking your dungheap might get, I had thought you would have exerted yourself to contact me. It seems I was wrong. Till the 1st, I am at Sligo, Co. Sligo.'
(2). [6 July 1957]. Typed letter (1 sheet), dated only 'Saturday'. Written from 'Palace Court Theatre' (Bournemouth). Refers to 'The Room': 'I was thinking, if there are too many references to the basement in her first speech, cut one or two - at your discretion, if you think it too much plugged. I know you're very busy but I'd be very grateful if you'd keep the idea of recording it on tape in mind.' The closing paragraph of the letter refers to listening 'with this wife of mine' to cricket commentary on the radio, hearing [Frank] 'Worrel [sic] complete his century'. (This suggests that the letter was written on Saturday 6 July 1957, when England played the West Indies at Nottingham, and Worrell scored 191 not out.)
(3). 18 June [1958]. Typed letter (1 sheet). Letter requesting that Woolf urgently sends the manuscript of The Dwarfs: 'Wax keeps asking me for it. I might as well give it to him. He'll try to get it published of course if he thinks it's any good. Don't think it is, really. But you know I was really relying on you to give me a critical objective assessment of it, to give me a clue, which you haven't done, you bastard.' Towards the end of the letter, Pinter notes: 'Shall listen tonight to McGee [sic] doing Malone Dies.' (Patrick Magee was broadcast reading from Samuel Beckett's Malone Dies on the Third Programme, Thursday 19 June, 1958).
(4). [1980]. Photocopy of a typed letter (5 pp.) from Pinter to Peter Wood (30 March 1958), with a photocopied covering typed note: 'This letter was written to the director of The Birthday Party just before rehearsals started for the first production of the play in April 1958. I had forgotten all about it, until I came across a copy in an old file a few months ago. It had been sitting there for some twenty-two years. It is not the kind of letter I could possibly write now and therefore I found it of interest.'
(5). 1985. Photocopy typescript (10 pp.) of 'A Play and its Politics: A Conversation between Harold Pinter and Nick Hern', together with a typed 'With Compliments' sheet noting that the conversation will be published in a special edition of One for the Road. The text of the conversation is annotated (within the copy): '3rd draft 15.1.85'. With envelope addressed to Woolf in Canada.
(6). 1 January 1996. 52 Campden Hill Square London. Autograph letter (1 sheet, lacking lower portion) wishing Woolf a Happy New Year. 'We go to Barbados for a fortnight on Sunday. Then I shall direct "12 Angry Men" for London's pulsating West End. We open at the Bristol Old Vic. That'll take you back a bit.'
(7). 4 March 2002. Photocopy of a fax from Pinter: 'To Susan, Henry & "The Birthday Party" company'. The best of the best from everyone at the Ethical Idall [sic], Bayswater and Monty Pinter'.
