- Title:
- Henry Woolf: Communications Sent by Fax to Harold Pinter
- Scope & Content:
- Communications sent from Henry Woolf by fax to Harold Pinter.
(1). 11 January 2000. Photocopy of part of a letter from Joyce Edwards to Woolf [written in mid-1960s?] faxed in 2000 to Pinter. The letter to Woolf begins: 'I must tell you about yesterday's Becket [sic] reading with Harold. Last week he rang up to ask if I'd care to go to this reading to be held in a Dulwich pub.' Comprising 8 sheets numbered pp. 3-10 by Woolf (i.e. lacking the first two sheets of the fax); original letter numbered pp. 8-15. An annotation by Woolf on the verso of the final sheet notes that Joyce Edwards is an old friend of them both. The date of Edwards's letter (and the reading) is not given, although she records that Vivien Merchant attended, 'her hair shorn to such an extent that I thought it was a boy'.
(2). 19 August 2001. Autograph message (2 sheets) concerning Monologue. Includes a remembered conversation between Pinter, Morris Wernick (Moishe) and Woolf 'strolling about [...] on the banks of the river Lee' [sic].
(3). 15 February 2002. Autograph message (4 sheets). 'I had a wonderful time in London. Thanks for "Monologue" and "The Last to Go" - and "The Room" come to that. You've made the last couple of years buzz for me all right.'
(4). 5 March 2002. Photocopy of a review of a performance of The Birthday Party (by the New Theatre Co-op, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) in which Woolf played Goldberg. The copy of the review is annotated with Woolf's accompanying message (1 sheet).
(5). 27 September 2005. Autograph message (2 sheets). 'The story the students love (the staff too) is your writing to me thus when I said I was going to be an actor: "What do you want to go into this shit-house of a profession for?"'
(6). [10 October 2005]. Undated autograph message headed 'For Harold on his seventy-fifth birthday', in the style of a cricket commentary (1 sheet).
(7). 18 October 2005. Autograph message (1 sheet). 'Congratulations again, many, for your Nobel Prize'.
(8). 10 February 2006. Autograph message with a typed poem by Woolf as the final page (5 sheets). Refers to 'the disgracefully begrudging and cowardly response to your fine Nobel speech in the British media', and hopes that Pinter's health is improving. 'Years ago, when you lived in Hanover Terrace and I inhabited a desert for a while I wrote the enclosed poem. It's not the same me now nor the same situation but there are similar overtones dontcherthink?' The poem begins: 'Passing the house / The first time after years'.
