- Title:
- M J T Tambimuttu: Miscellaneous Prose
- Scope & Content:
-
(1) Two Poetry London editorials in draft: 'Second Letter' and 'Eleventh Letter', published, respectively, in Poetry London, 1:2 (1939) and 3:11 (1947).
(2) Notes (manuscript, in Tambimuttu's hand on PL embossed notepaper) with the heading 'Why I have chosen Shakuntala', together with a completed essay (typescript) entitled 'Sakuntala', and three items of related correspondence. The essay considers Sakuntala ('the ideal of Indian woman-hood') as 'the flower of Sanskrit drama and the finest creation of India's greatest poet, Kalidasa' (paragraphs 1 and 2). [Shakuntala was also to be the name of Tambimuttu's daughter, born 1962.]
(3) An article (typescript) entitled 'The New Dominion of Ceylon' submitted speculatively to the Evening Standard newspaper (London) shortly before the opening of the Ceylon Parliament by the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester (4 February, 1948). With covering letter (19 January, 1948) from Tambimuttu to the Editor, together with an unfavourable reply (20 February) from Charles Curran, Features Editor. Tambimuttu states that the article submitted has previously appeared in Everybody's and was being sent to the Standard to give an indication of the scope of a further article. With: an exchange of letters between Tambimuttu and Stefan Schimanski (of Everybody's); copy letter to George Barnes, The Third Programme, BBC; and a copy letter to The Keystone Press Agency Ltd.
(4) A prospectus for a travel book, 'Tell You About an Island: Ceylon Re-Visited' by Tambimuttu with photographs by Philip Boucas, described as 'an intimate picture by a well-known editor and publisher who visits his country after an absence of eleven years' (thus suggesting a date for the prospectus of 1949). The prospectus includes a list of Contents ('done from memory'), i.e. a holiday itinerary.
