- Title:
- Diary and consultations of the Council in China
- Scope & Content:
- Two days ago we were surprized with an account that one of the Mandarins had seized & carried away Mr Pricklove, the 2d mate of the Cadogan, & four of the inferior officers & others belonging to that ship, without any manner of reason, as they were quietly walking the street near the Factory, & that there were a great many soldiers about our houses ready to seize any of us that should stir out. As we were wholly ignorant of what should be the occasion of it, we went therefore that afternoon to the Hoppo's. We found it had been done without the cognisance of either the Chuntuck, Fuyen or Hoppo; that the Mandarin who had committed this insult upon us had beaten the persons he had seized very much & taken the mony out of their pockets and striped them of many other things of value; & on his being called before the Chuntuck, had nothing to say for himself but that he had done it by an order or chop from the Tituck or General of the soldiers. However, we obtained the liberty of the persons carried away & have demanded that satisfaction be made us for the indignity offered our Honourable Masters in our persons, & that not only the things which the Mandarin took away may be returned but that an exemplary punishment be inflicted on the offending Mandarine, alledging that without this it would be impossible for the English nation to continue their trade here. As our linguists are not masters enough of our language to make him [the Hoppo] comprehend the full force of our reasons, we prepared yesterday a memorial written in French, that they may gett it translated into the Chinese language by one of the Padres.
