- We reiterated our proposall to Suqua rejecting all his reasons for staying & doing our business at Canton, but we found him absolutely resolved not to go to Amoy. Nor could we persuade him to engage for the making the silks which we were directed to get made here & sent us to Amoy, for he said it would be impossible to have such a quantity made here when we were gone without having it known they were for us, & then, he feared, they would be stopped by the Mandarines either here or in their passage through this province. So we then went to Ton Hunqua, whom we esteem to be the best man upon the place next to Suqua, but found him as averse to quitting this place as the other.
