- Title:
- Diary and consultations of the Council in China
- Scope & Content:
- Resolved that Messrs Naish, Godfrey and Nicholson be at liberty to talk freely with Suqua and endeavour to persuade him to undertake to engross the green teas this year expected in Canton, and to secure what may probably be sent to Amoy, which may soon be brought from thence to this place, and likewise to desire him to declare the lowest prices and in what time he can deliver the several articles we are ordered to provide, it being unanimously agreed that Suqua is the most able and most skilfull merchant in Canton, consequently preferable to all others for engrossing any particular commodity, which is impossible to be executed by many hands without raising the price greatly, and even then there can be no certainty of succeeding in such a scheme, especially in the article we are to engross, which we verily believe would rise to double its present value if wee were to contract with more than one person.
