- Title:
- Diary and consultations of the Council in China
- Scope & Content:
- Mr Godfrey opened this consultation by reporting all that passed between Suqua, Messrs Naish, Nicholson and himself, to the following purport. That as he as the senior merchant now in Canton, wee therefore gave him preference to all others, being agreed to let him know what commodities wee were to provide, and as green teas was the principall article, he was first asked how much he could procure, and after a long and serious consideration he said he might probably be able to secure eight or nine thousand pecul, declareing at the same time he could not engage for that quantity unless wee would promise not to enquire after or buy any ourselves, and that he was supplied with a sum of mony to send up the country. He was then told that in case we should come to such an agreement, he must likewise promise on his part not to provide any for the French or any other person or persons whatever, to which he readily assented.
