- Title:
- Diary and consultations of the Council in China
- Scope & Content:
- Ton Hunqua hath been confined two days by the Hoppo & three days in the custody of the Namhoyyen, but on what account was variously reported. We have been able to learn that the Hoppo had told Ton Hunqua that he was by no means a fit person to trade with Europeans & yett he had presumed to enter into contracts with us. Others say that a certain debt due to the Emperour from his wife's family, which he was accountable for, was the cause of his confinement at the Namhoyyen's, that his having had a correspondence by letters to England & Holland was a very great crime & that the Foyen & Chontuck have had a consultation thereupon, the result of which was not publickly known. Mr Naish then observed he had heard Ton Hunqua was released from the Namhoyyen's & was now at his Hong, and therefore sent for him. When he came he answered that the Hoppo had indeed endeavoured to prevent his dealing with us this year, but it was because he would not submit to the arbitrary proceedings of some Mandarins.
