- Title:
- Diary and consultations of the Council in China
- Scope & Content:
- This morning one of the merchants informed us that yesterday arrived a chop from the Emperour directed to the Chuntuck & Foyen, with orders to displace the Hoppo & appoint another Mandarin to act in that station till further orders. The said order was executed yesterday evening on the Hoppo, by seizing on everything they could lay hands on & securing his person. Seuqua, Pinky & Cuqua (of Houta Hong) were likewise sent for & imprisoned on account of some affairs relating to the Hoppo which we have not a true knowledge of at present. We are credibly informed that he hath defrauded the Emperour of a considerable part of the customs & in order to a full discovery thereof the merchants are ordered to produce a full account of what customs they have paid him during his being Hoppo here, which being a considerable time, & most of the merchants having been his favorites at times, occasions a great consternation amongst them. The Hoppo had so little thought of such a revolution that he esteemed had a strong interest at Court, having about four days ago obtained a chop from Court, directed to the Chuntuck, ordering him to send Ton Hunqua away from hence to the province of Fokien, as a very bad man, in a disgraceful manner. But now that order is countermanded & Ton Hunqua is to continue till the Hoppo's process is made & he found guilty or acquitted of the things laid to his charge, the latter of which there is little prospect of, having his enemies for his judges. The Chuntuck & Foyen have appointed the Conchefu to act as Hoppo. 'Tis reported that he is a very good man.
