Announces Popham's arrival at Jedda and offers friendship and commercial agreements. Marked "P.1". Dated Romney, Jedda Harbour; ff.141-144 26 Jun 1801 Copy of letter from Sir Home Popham to the Earl of Elgin, British Ambassador to Constantinople. Popham relates the circumstances and purpose of his mission and reports on behaviour of the Sheriff of Mecca. The Sheriff is 'an usurper', patronised by the French and unlikely to negotiate with British unless French are driven from Egypt. Marked "P.2". Dated Romney, Coseir Bay; ff.145-148, f.151 10 Jun 1801 Copy of letter from Nawab Mirza Mehendi Ali Khan to Major General Baird, Commander in Chief of the British Troops in the Red Sea. Seeks redress for insults given to him by the Sheriff of Mecca after Popham's departure from Jedda. Marked "P.3." Dated Jedda; ff.149-150 10 Jun 1801 Copy of letter from Nawab Mirza Mehendi Ali Khan to Major General Baird, Commander in Chief of the British Troops in the Red Sea. Describes plight of the imprisoned former Sheriff, Abdella, and suggests that he be supported by the British in his efforts to regain the throne. Marked "A". Dated Jedda; f.151 10 Jun 1801 Copy of letter from Nawab Mirza Mehendi Ali Khan to Major General Baird; ff.152-154 28 Jun 1801 Copy of letter from David Baird to Sir Home Popham. Advises Popham to investigate the complaints about the Sheriff of Mecca but take no action unless success seems certain. Marked "P.4." Dated Coseir; ff.155-157 7 Jul 1801 Copy of letter from Nawab Mirza Mehendi Ali Khan to Sir Home Popham. Asks Popham to take him on board the Warren Hastings as he believes his life to be in danger. Marked "P.5". Dated Jedda.
