This part contains correspondence concerning India Army officers and Civil Officers loaned to the War Office to conduct work involving administration and interpreting Hindustani due to the First World War. It includes discussion of the terms of their deployment including rates of pay and allowances and their modification and redeployment once the Armistice was in place and their services were no longer needed.
It also includes (ff 49-64) the 'List of Civil Officers lent by the Secretary of State to other Government Departments in connection with the War (Fifth edition. Revised to September 1917); and (ff 117-130) the 'List of Civil Officers lent by the Secretary of State to other Government Departments in connection with the War' (Fourth edition. Revised to 1st March 1917).
The principal correspondents include the Chief Secretary to the Government of Burma, the Viceroy; and the Secretary of State, India Office (John Evelyn Shuckburgh).
