The item comprises batches of printed correspondence relating to political and economic affairs in Persia [Iran]. The batches were sent as enclosures by the Government of India, Foreign and Political Department, to the India Office, London. The printed correspondence is principally between officials at the British Legation, Tehran, the Foreign Office, London, and the Government of India, Foreign and Political Department, and dates from 8 June 1926 to 9 November 1929.
The papers cover a wide range of subjects, including:
- Relations between Persia and Russia, including British concerns about Bolshevik [Soviet] influence in Persia
- Ministerial dismissals, resignations and appointments
- An American financial mission, commissioned by Reza Shah [Reżā Shāh Pahlavī] and led by Arthur Chester Millspaugh
- Commercial matters, particularly Persia's trade relations with Russia
- Administrative matters, including a revision of Britain's consular districts
- Unrest and outright rebellion within the Persian Army owing to suspected corruption among military leaders, particularly in Khorasan and Azerbaijan provinces
- Relations between Britain and Persia and British policy towards the country
- Legislative matters, including elections to the Majlis [legislative assembly] and the passing of bills
- Relations between Iraq and Persia, particularly border transgressions by individuals and nomadic tribes
- The abolition by the Persian Government of 'The Capitulations' – judicial and financial privileges granted to imperial powers during the nineteenth century
- An investigation into judicial processes in the provinces, with a focus on corruption
- Opposition in Isfahan, Shiraz and Tabriz to the Conscription Law
- Growing German influence and activity in Persia.
Additional correspondence, included as enclosures, originates from: British political, military and diplomatic officials from throughout Persia and the surrounding region; British diplomatic representatives in Europe; and Persian Government officials.
The item includes anti-Soviet propaganda by the League of National Emancipation that contains anti-Semitic language that may cause offence.
The French language material consists of correspondence to and from Persian Government officials.
